Federer, Agassi headline Saturday's play
NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) -- Andre Agassi and Roger Federer headline the middle Saturday of the U.S. Open with Maria Sharapova playing a supporting role.
World number one Federer, looking to become the first man to win three grand slam titles in the same year since Mats Wilander in 1988, takes on wily Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in a third round match.
Agassi, bidding to become the oldest U.S. Open champion since Ken Rosewall in 1970, is also in third round action against 25th-seed Czech Jiri Novak.
With Agassi and Andy Roddick the only American men to reach the third round, the worst performance in the history of the tournament, the 34-year-old will be desperate to keep his interest alive into the second week.
Wimbledon champion Sharapova has not quite replicated her form of earlier in the summer at Flushing Meadows and she will have to sharpen up her game against former French and Australian Open champion Mary Pierce.
There are three other Russian women in action. Elena Bovina takes on in-form Lindsay Davenport, Svetlana Kuznetsova, the ninth seed, faces Amy Frazier, while Nadia Petrova is up against Silvia Farina Elia.
Top seed Justine Henin-Hardenne, the top seed and defending champion, continues her defence of the title against experienced American Lisa Raymond.
In men's singles, third seed Carlos Moya and fifth seed Tim Henman take on Olivier Rochus and Michal Tabara respectively.
