Who knows if the show will be any good, but at least we know the showroom is going to be a stunner. Steve Wynn unveiled his plans for the $100 million theater going into Wynn Las Vegas for a new Franco Dragone (Cirque du Soleil, Celine Dion) spectacular and the design attempts to break new ground… or water as the case may be. The 2,000-seat room will be shaped like a globe with the audience sitting in sections that will have water flowing above, below, around, and through them. As opposed to a traditional stage, the performance will occur throughout the room, immersing the audience in the action, which the designers guarantee will be no farther than 40 feet from any seat. There’s no exact word yet on what the show is going to be, although rumors have abounded about a Cirque style spectacle centering around a Himalayan boy who could fly. Whatever it is, the show and the showroom are expected to open with the hotel in the spring of 2005.

Get your calendars our now and save the date of April 28, 2005. That’s the very special Thursday night the Wynn Las Vegas will open on the land once home to the legendary Desert Inn, making it the first new mega-resort on The Strip in five years. The $2 billion Wynn property, done by the same guy that did Mirage and Bellagio, will feature over 2,000 suites, a 8-story man made mountain along the Strip shielding a lake, and its own Ferrari and Maserati dealerships among other luxury perks.
By the way, that April 28th date is significant in a couple of ways – it is Steve Wynn’s wife’s birthday and it is the same date (or within a few days of the same date depending on what source you listen to) on which the Desert Inn opened in 1950.

(From the response to a readers question:) But the biggest winner so far has to be Steve Wynn’s company. Wynn Resorts Limited was trading around $13 last year at this time and today is at around $40 per share – and this is all without any income or property to speak of – they don’t even have a casino yet! If Wynn Las Vegas opens next year as an out of the box success you can expect that share price to go through the roof. Of course, if the hotel is at all viewed as anything less than an instant success, that share price will likely go down quickly. It’s all a big gamble.

We got an up-close view of the new Wynn Las Vegasresort a couple of weeks ago and are happy to report that everything appears to be coming along quickly. According to published reports they are actually ahead of schedule. As it stands now the hotel tower is probably about halfway erected (25 stories or so of an eventual 50) and the lower floors are already getting their facing - a deep coppery bronze mirror effect that will look pretty classy in our humble opinion.
Wynn Las Vegas is currently scheduled to open in spring 2005, which sounds like a long time away but is really only about a year and a half away. Time flies.

The former owner of Bellagio, Steve Wynn, went on an art spending spree a couple of weeks ago, blowing more than $40 million on two paintings. The developer of the upcoming Le Reve mega-resort purchased “In the Roses” by Renoir and a self-portrait from Cezanne at an auction and has put them on display in the temporary Wynn Gallery space at the former Desert Inn. The new paintings will be part of the permanent art gallery display when Le Reve opens in 2005.
Speaking of Le Reve, all of us who are itching to see an artist’s rendering of what Le Reve will look like will apparently have to wait a little longer. At a shareholder meeting for his company, Wynn told eager investors they would have to be patient and wait a little longer to see what the new masterpiece will be since he didn’t want to allow competitors a chance to copy what he calls a “revolutionary” design.
Le Reve is currently under construction on the site of the former Desert Inn and appears to be progressing quickly with the main hotel tower rising steadily upward above The Strip.

Steve Wynn spoke at a homebuilders’ convention last week and dropped a few more juicy details about his upcoming $2 billion Le Reve mega-resort. Among the details:
A $100 million domed showroom will feature just over 2,000 seats with a stage at the center. It will feature a new Cirque du Soleil show produced by Franco Dragone, the same guy that did “Mystere” and “O” and is currently working on Celine Dion’s show for Caesars.
A 15-story manmade mountain will be built along The Strip, hiding the hotel from view.
The interior side of the mountain will feature a 5-story waterfall cascading into a manmade lake and will serve as the backdrop for a “choreographed multimedia presentation.”
Le Reve is being built on the land that used to be home to The Desert Inn, just north of The Venetian. It is projected to open in early 2005.
