The Rockies are always a hard team to beat at Coors Field but that didn’t stop the Cubs scoring 10 in three innings in an 11-8 win on Wednesday night, to take sole possession of first in the National League Wild Card standings. After pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney hit a go-ahead two-run homer for Colorado, Aramis Ramirez homered to make it 7-6. Todd Walker added a two-run homer two batters later for the Cubs, who used 15 hits to win their third straight game and fifth of six.

On the same night the Giants lost to the Cincinnati Reds 8-7 at SBC Park, to fall two back of Chicago and one game behind the Padres in the NL Wild Card race. The loss sent the third-place Giants tumbling to 6 ½ games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

The two teams meet at SBC Park on Friday for the start of a 3-game weekend series.
